An 18-year-old girl was attacked with acid for rejecting a marriage proposal in east Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar on Thursday.

She has suffered permanent damage to her eyes, police said.  The girl works as a labourer at a shoe-sole factory, and was allegedly attacked by a colleague and her brother.

“The girl sustained 60 per cent burns and is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital. Her condition is stated to be out of danger,” said a police officer.

The accused have been identified as Golu and his sister, who is said to be a juvenile.
The girl lives with her family at Gandhi Nagar A-2 block and was at home when the brother and sister met her at 8.30 pm.

The siblings live in Ghaziabad and had been insisting on her marriage to Golu. He had tried to meet the girl at her house at least thrice.

“On Thursday, an argument broke out between them over the marriage proposal. During the melee, Golu used a bottle of acid to attack the girl,” the officer said.

It is alleged that Golu was in an inebriated condition and was carrying a white plastic bottle containing acid.

They fled when neighbours began to gather there.  The girl was taken to hospital in an autorickshaw.

A case under section 326-A (causing grievous hurt by throwing acid) of the Indian Penal Code has been filed with Gandhi Nagar police station.

The family members of the victim told police investigators that Golu often harassed her.
On Friday, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal met the girl and her family members at the hospital.

“The victim is in critical condition. I met the Medical Superintendent to assess her status and found that her care had been neglected,” Maliwal told the media.

Maliwal alleged that her bandages had not been changed since 10 pm on Thursday. “After the commission’s intervention, the girl was shifted to a private ward,” she added.
