Will go to jail but not drop stir, says Unions

Employees’ unions of the State-run transport corporations (STCs) have said that there is no question of going back on their decision to go on an indefinite strike even if they are put behind the bars.

KSRTC Staff and Workers’ Federation General Secretary H V Anantha Subbarao said all the employees of the four STCs are ready to go to jail in case the state government takes a call to invoke the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) against them.

Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, Rao defended their indefinite strike call. He said that they had placed their demand for a salary hike before the government in November last year itself. However, the government did not respond, forcing them to resort to strike.

He said that ‘administrative failure’ was the reason for the STCs suffering losses and that the government had unnecessarily passed blamed to the transport utilities for the losses.

Rao also questioned why the government did not give employees a pay hike when the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation had made profits between 2002-2011. He said the government did not treat employees with a right attitude.

When contacted, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the government has not yet taken a decision to invoke the ESMA on the striking employees.
