PIL in HC against bus strike

Last Updated 24 July 2016, 20:30 IST

A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the High Court seeking directions to the BMTC and KSRTC employees’ unions to call off their indefinite strike.

The petitioner - R Vasudevan, a resident of Channasandra - has claimed that the employees of the transport corporations come under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) and hence they cannot strike work.

The petitioner has contended that the KSRTC, BMTC and their workmen represented by their unions are considered a ‘public utility’ under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 and they provide essential service under the ESMA.

He has claimed that a majority of the people who use public transport system belong to middle and lower classes of society and they cannot afford to travel by any alternative mode of transport.
