Last Updated 25 July 2016, 19:19 IST

The Army on Monday lodged a police complaint against telecom giant Airtel and a functionary of the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) for distributing pre-active mobile sim cards in the tribal areas of the state without any verification or documentation.

The incident has raised serious security threats as about 40 underground armed groups operate in Manipur.

The Army had nabbed a person close to the ATSUM, distributing such sim cards while an Army patrol passed the area as a part of routine duty. According to Army sources, On July 21, a formation of the Army belonging to the Red Shield Division that operates in the state, was out on patrol when they found out that Airtel pre-activated sim cards were being distributed among local tribals without verification of antecedents of the customers in Manipur’s Khoupum Valley in Tamenglong district.
