An amendment bill prohibiting all forms of employment of children below 14 years but allowing adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age to work in their family enterprise or take up non-hazardous jobs was approved by Parliament on Tuesday.

The Lok Sabha passed the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2012, with voice vote after Union Minister of State (independent charge) Bandaru Dattatreya gave clarifications on the issues raised by members during discussion on its provisions.

“Employment of children below 14 years of age has been totally banned. There should not be any confusion. We have provided certain exceptions only to ensure that the law can be practically implemented at grass root level. We have made adequate safeguards and provisions for working conditions of adolescents,” the minister told the Lok Sabha.
