Another toppers' scam in MBBS admission

Last Updated 26 July 2016, 19:09 IST

A Bihar-type toppers’ scam was unearthed by the CID in Telangana following a complaint by a concerned parent of an MBBS aspirant who attended the Engineering, Agriculture, Medical Common Entrance Test (Eamcet 2) examination and failed to secure a rank.

The CID has so far identified four rankers and two middlemen  over their involvement in the scam.

According to sources, the parent of a student who secured top rank in internal tests at the Vijayawada-based Brilliant Medical Academy that imparts coaching for medical stream under the Eamcet examination grew suspicious after his daughter, a bright student, secured 4,000 rank in Eamcet 2. He dug further and realised that certain students who disappeared from the centre a week before the examination were in the toppers’ list.

Two students who were at the bottom of the class at the academy secured 295 and 704 ranks in the actual test that took place on July 9 in centres across Telangana and AP. Also the daughter of one of the two middlemen who secured 23,000 rank in Eamcet 1, which was cancelled due to the NEET controversy, secured 13 rank in Eamcet 2 confirming his suspicion.

The ranks were announced on July14 and counselling for filling 2,650 MBBS and BDS seats was supposed to take place from Monday. However, the Telangana State Council of Higher Education has postponed counselling for a week after the government CID was entrusted with the investigation and an FIR was filed. Out of the total 50,961 students who appeared for the test, 47,644 were declared qualified to participate in the counselling.

According to the Telangana CID, two brokers Kumar and Dayakar who are absconding now, gathered around 65 aspirants of the medical entrance exam and took them to a resort in Sankarpally on the outskirts here a week before the exam and supplied them 320 multiple questions from two sets of the examination papers (160 questions each). It is believed that the brokers who might have collected the question papers from the printing press or a clerk from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University that conducted the examination charged Rs 75 lakh from each of the student in exchange of the leaked question papers.

On Tuesday, the Telangana Police questioned the management of the Vijayawada-based academy who agreed that at least 4 of the 19-member batch that took coaching from the academy left on July 3 and 4 as their parents suddenly came and took away their children. “There could be many more coaching centres involved in the scam,” a senior police official said.

The CID, which is questioning the top rankers and their parents, have booked cases under IPC 406, 408, 420 read with 120b, Section 8 of AP Public Examination Prevention of Malpractices Act of 1987.
