Soon, Bengaluru streets to get new identity with unique numbers

The system will make finding addresses easier, says BBMP

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon assign unique numbers to all the streets in its jurisdiction.

As part of the exercise to give  unique numbers, the BBMP has classified all streets into ward and major streets. Streets that start and end within the jurisdiction of a ward are called ward streets and they will go with the prefix “W”. Streets that run cross more than two wards are called major streets and they will have the prefix “M”. The BBMP has identified 91,000 streets in its jurisdiction. The Palike will share the unique numbers of streets with the Postal department, IT Adviser to BBMP T Sheshadri said.

The unique number will be a combination of type of street (ward street or major street), ward number and street number. Street numbers are given on the basis of an odd-even formula: Streets running from north to south direction will go with odd numbers and those from east to west will have even numbers. The numbering is being done in such a way that they do not overlap with each other, he said.

However, the existing names of the streets, for instance Malleswaram 16th cross or RPC Layout 7th main will continue. The BBMP IT Cell considers cross or main streets and their numbers as mere names. In other words, numbering of streets is being done for the first time in Bengaluru. Names given by the BBMP council to many streets after noted personalities, for example Dr Rajkumar Road, will remain intact, he added.

Streets in Bengaluru have been named in a haphazard manner. The BBMP has a large number of revenue pockets that were formed by private land developers, with or without the approval of the local urban development authority. Over the years, the civic agency has blindly retained the street names given at the time of development of layouts. Hence, street names and their numbers overlap in almost all the wards, making it a tough task to locate an address.

“The BBMP IT cell has almost completed the exercise of assigning unique numbers in all the 198 wards. We are verifying the details in some places. We plan to make it official along with the proposed Geographic Information System (GIS)-based property tax tracking system at the earliest,” BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad said.

The Palike has also prepared a GIS map of streets and it will be linked to the GIS-based property tax tracking system. The BBMP revenue officials are currently conducting physical verification of streets and properties identified through GIS. The Palike will also give unique Property Identity (PID) number to all the taxable properties in its jurisdiction. The unique PID comprises ward number, street number and property number.
