At least five people were washed away in floodwaters on Thursday in Assam, with the situation turning extremely grim, leaving 18 lakh people affected.

Neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, too, witnessed fresh incidents of landslides.

One person died in Dhemaji district, three died in Barpeta and another person died in Kokrajhar district of Assam.

ASDMA report
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), about 3,374 villages were affected by floods till Thursday evening.

Nearly 2.3 lakh people have taken shelter in 517 relief camps in some of the flood-hit districts.

Apart from the Brahmaputra, Dhansiri, Jai Bharali, Puthimri, Beki Sankosh, Subansiri and Buri Dehing rivers are flowing above danger level. The Majuli River Island is also facing a massive flood threat, a source said.

CM’s aerial survey
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday undertook an aerial survey of the flood-affected Majuli, Nagaon, Morigaon, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and took stock of the prevailing flood situation in these districts.

Minister for Water Resources Keshab Mahanta and Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Naba Kumar Doley also accompanied the chief minister.

Assam is reeling under severe floods for the last one week due to heavy rainfall in the upper catchment areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Bhutan, as well as heavy rainfall in Assam.

ASDMA has opened a round-the-clock control room with toll-free numbers 1070, 1079 & 0361-2237011, an official source said.

1.76 lakh hit in Meghalaya
At least 1.76 lakh people in Meghalaya’s plain belt areas of West Garo Hills have been affected by floods with not much relief coming in from the district administration.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma made an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas on Wednesday and asked the district administration to expedite relief measures.

In 2014, Garo hills had witnessed the worst flood situation with over 90 people killed and damages estimated at about Rs 600 crores.

In flood-hit Arunachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Pema Khandu made a spot inspection of some landslide sites.
