Small elements, big effect

For those who love wall paintings, the living room wall can be a great canvas. Little elements often add great value to your home, writes K S Someswara

Interior decoration is an integral element of every home. Sometimes, the exercise may turn out to be rather expensive, while on other occasions, even small things can work their magic on the space. Given that every house is a unique manifestation of the dweller’s personality and like and dislikes, there are ‘rights’ and ‘wrongs’ here. But it’s good to be in the know of some basic fundas.

No, it’s not that complex. You can easily give a new look to your space with some wisely chosen artefacts. These artefacts could be anything: a bronze figurine handed down to you from your grandmother or a souvenir you picked up on your last
holiday. Here are some suggestions to help you design your home:

* Alluring artwork: Generally, it has been observed that people prefer framed paintings, which can be hung on walls, according to one’s taste. These are available in many affordable forms too. Murals are another option, though they may require bigger spaces and also involve extra expenses; moreover, they also need more time for maintenance.

* Figurine love: If you have the habit of collecting figurines, there’s good news for you. They are some of the best interior decor items. They can be placed on open shelves or on a corner stand. They can also be grouped together according to a theme and placed on a table in the foyer. Small statuettes can find a place at different corners without cluttering the area. A large statue of Buddha or Radha-Krishna or Ganesha can be housed in either the balcony or the garden of your home.

* Artsy tables: Even small tables or a coffee table can be altered into an artwork. A small work of carpentry can help you place the canvas of your drawing or artwork on the table, which then becomes a designer tabletop, covered with transparent glass or even some painted glass.

A decorative coffee table can be very interesting in the living room or sit-out in the balcony.

* Wall paintings: If one loves wall paintings, a good canvas for them would be the living room wall. Nowadays, it is a trend to get one of the four walls painted in a different and bright colour. Instead, this wall can be decorated with some bright oil paintings. It could either be a landscape or a favourite photograph or an eye-catching picturesque scenery. This will surely give the living room a rich and cosy look.

* Attractive headboards: Beds with headboards offer an elegant look to the bedroom. It is preferred that the headboard is separate from the bed. An abstract painting hung few inches above the bed can make the bedroom look cool and dreamy.

* Screenshots that wow: Screenshots are another popular option. For this, a double-sided painting, or printed or embroidered fabric is a must. Even a wooden screen frame with an opaque base and glass top can be a great value adder. The painting or prints encased in the glass will give an alluring look.

* Splash of green: Grow a green thumb by bringing in some plants into your home. It could be herbs or flowering plants — the  choice is yours. Now don’t grow these plants in some boring containers. Use your creativity to paint some of the old water bottles and tin cans in bright shades and use them to grow something green. It will add lots of sunshine to the space.

* Wood is good: Wood is an area of home decor that can be exploited in every sense. You can bring in wooden furniture for your living room or get masks and other decor elements made of wood. Or you could simply get a rocking chair to add to the natural appeal of the space.

* Mirror on the wall: Mirrors are our best friends when it comes to home decor. Reflecting lots of sunshine, they make a space look spacious and bright. Nowadays, intricately-designed mirrors are the rage. So, get one for your abode too. You can also go in for smaller but charming mirrors for the bedroom or bathroom.

In the end, it’s not really about the amount of money that you are willing to spend on your home’s decor, it’s a matter of imagination and creativity. And, of course, investing in the right artefacts.
Happy designing to you!
