IESA to open office in Japan, Taiwan

India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) on Friday said it will open offices in Japan and Taiwan.

In an interaction with DH, IESA President M N Vidyashankar said these two offices will further enhance business ecosystem for the electronics industry.

“We are aggressively perusing to make India the manufacturing hub of electronics and semiconductor items. We need the assistance from those who have already made the ecosystem. Japan and Taiwan definitely fit into this category,” Vidyashankar said.

According to Vidyashankar, the Indian electronics industry is providing a total revenue of $32.7 billion and the demand is rising almost 25% CAGR.

“India might require $400 billion electronic items by 2020. The Indian electronics consumer market has an annual turnover of Rs 500 billion and revenue contribution is $150 billion. There is going to be a huge gap in supply and demand,” he said.

The offices will become the nodal point for Indian companies that are looking for partnerships and joint ventures. “It will help Indian companies find the ideal partners with technology. Also, they will find manufacturing destination which expanded the ecosystem in the industry,” he said.

In November last year, the IESA signed an MoU with semiconductor manufacturing city Fukuoka in Japan.

According to Japan External Trade Organisation (Jetro) authorities, the office will further enhance the business synergy between the two countries.

“Fukuoka is a semiconductor industry base in Japan and India can learn more from them. It will help in promoting bilateral trade and technology transfer too,” said the official.

Taiwan-based Out-of-the-Box Consultancy founder and CEO Mignonne Man-jung Chan, who is leading the IESA initiative, said India has the talent base to compete globally. “India should have a coordination between the government, academia and the business community to enhance capabilities in semiconductor and electronic sectors. Also, the country should send talent pool to work with universities and companies abroad, and later on find ways to retain the talent in the country,” said Chan.

The IESA will organise workshops and B2B meetings through these respective offices in Japan and Taiwan. “These offices will help garner design capabilities and value addition in product phases for our companies. Also, we hope that it will further expand our ‘Make in India’ initiative and Skill India programmes,” he said.

Of the total global electronic industry market of $1.8 trillion, India consumes roughly about $125 billion and the electronics industry contribution to GDP is 1.7%.
