One more dies of dengue

MLA Amanatullah's relative succumbs to fever

Dengue claimed one more life in the city taking the death toll to at least four this season. Nazish, 38, succumbed to dengue shock syndrome at Apollo Hospitals on Friday afternoon. The deceased is the sister-in-law of Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan.

“The 38-year-old patient was admitted to Apollo Hospitals on Thursday around midnight. The platelet count was recorded to be 11,000 at the time of admission. The patient succumbed to dengue at 2 pm on Friday,” said a spokesperson, Apollo Hospitals. Nazish had fever for over three days.

“We came to know from the report on Thursday that she has dengue. She had fever for over three days but her condition was stable. She was admitted at night when her platelet dipped. Her condition started deteriorating in the morning,” said Amanatulla Khan, the victim’s relative.

“Her daughter also has dengue and is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospitals,” said Khan. The municipal corporation of Delhi has not recorded any dengue death till now. While one patient succumbed to dengue at Lok Nayak Hospital, two other patients died at Safdarjung Hospital.

The South Delhi Municipal Corporation has recorded 171 dengue cases till August 6. However, the actual number of patients who have tested positive for dengue is estimated to be much more.

Hospitals across the city have seen a surge in dengue cases since July. The three major Centre-run hospitals Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS have together seen over 250 cases till now, according to data collected from the hospitals. Delhi government hospitals have also reported dengue cases which takes the total number of dengue cases well beyond 171.

“Till June 27, AIIMS has recorded 61 dengue cases. The hospital has also seen 27 cases of malaria till June,” said an AIIMS official. Safdarjung Hospital has seen 164 dengue cases and RML Hospital 24 cases, confirmed senior doctors at the hospital.

Of the total number of dengue cases reported at AIIMS till June, 10 were AIIMS staff. “There has been surge in fever cases, including dengue. The waiting for admission for the AIIMS staff is 16. There are 33 beds allotted for AIIMS internal staff and all the beds are currently occupied,” said Dr Vijay Gurjar, president, Residents’ Doctors Association, AIIMS.
