Develop rational thoughts to deal with inequalities: scholar

Last Updated 14 August 2016, 18:57 IST

A healthy society should be based on rational thoughts. Extremist thoughts and violence cannot be a solution for the problems such as inequality, said Kannada University, Hampi, research scholar and professor Dr M Chandra Poojary.

He was addressing the regional conference organised by Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) on the theme ‘Be Moderate, Say No to Extremism’ at Town Hall on Sunday.

One needs to develop rational thoughts to find solution to various kinds of inequalities such as caste-based inequality, economy-based inequality and so on. In our society, 50% of the people who lie in the bottom of the pyramid, comprise dalit, tribal, minority and backward classes. They lack social, economic, cultural and political equality, he said.

About 80% of the resources are used by 10% of people who have money power while the rest 20% is shared among the others. Out district is not an exception when it comes to this inequality. Mainly, women and the minorities lack political representation. Even though the population comprises 50% of women, not even 10% of them have political representation.

Similarly, the minority comprises 20% of the population and only 10% of them have political representation. He said that 13% of the minority are muslim and not even two percent of them have political representation. The non-minorities cannot understand the problems of the minorities, he said.

Poojary also said that hero worship is not a good development in a democratic system.

‘See rightly’

SIO Karnataka state president Labeed Shafi said that today’s youth needs to see the developments around them in the right perspective and should understand the real meaning of religion.

Lamenting that some groups are nurturing the attitude of celebrating the death of intellectuals these days, he said that one needs to focus on the common things among the religions in order to re-establish brotherhood and harmony in the society. Some groups have been creating clashes among the people belonging to different religions to fulfill their selfish motives, he added.

Students Islamic  Organisation of India National President Iqbal Hussian presided over the programme. Jama-ate Islami Hind, Mangaluru President Mohammed Kunhi spoke on the occasion. SIO Karnataka Zonal Coordinator Iqbal Hussain and SIO district President Mohammed Rafeeq were present among others.
