The cases of dengue, a mosquito-borne disease, is on the rise in the district.
Out of 194 suspected case, the district has reported 34 confirmed case of dengue, so far, this year. However no deaths have been reported due to dengue in the last three years.

Dengue fever is transmitted by the bite of an Aedes mosquito, infected with dengue virus. The mosquito gets infected when it bites a person with dengue virus in blood.

The Aedes mosquito breeds in rainwater collected in articles like old tyres, water tanks, and drains around the house during monsoon. The surroundings should be kept dry and clean to prevent dengue.

While a majority of the cases have been reported from KR Pet taluk (12), no dengue cases have been reported so far from Nagamangala taluk. Six dengue cases were reported from Mandya taluk, seven from Maddur, four from Srirangapatna and three and two dengue cases were reported from malavalli and Pandavapura taluks respectively.

District Health and Family Welfare Officer Dr K Mohan said, “There is no need for anxiety if a patient is confirmed of suffering from dengue. Though there is no specific treatment for the disease, the fever can be kept under control. But, preventive measures should be taken to keep the disease at bay.”

12 chikungunya cases

Twelve chikungunya cases have been reported in the district between January and July end this year. As per the available statistics, 13 persons had contracted with chikungunya in 2014 and 65 in 2015.

Dr K G Bhavanishankar, Health Officer, said, “Necessary arrangements have been made to conduct blood tests. Blood banks have been instructed to provide neces-
sary blood and platelets to the needy. The private hospitals too have been directed
to inform, if they admit pati-ents tested positive for dengue.

“Immediate measures are taken to clean and fogging is carried out to kill mosquitoes in the affected villages. Asha and anganwadi workers have been educated on creating awareness against the spread of the disease. Demonstration has been conducted and handbills are distributed at schools to create awareness among students,” said Dr Mohan.
