South MCD to inaugurate four new sterilisation centres

Last Updated 24 August 2016, 06:27 IST

In a bid to curb the menace of strays, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation is all set to inaugurate four new dog sterilisation centres next month.

These centres, located in Nangli, Bijwasan, Mundala and Masoodpur, have been equipped with one operation unit each having the capacity to sterilise around 15 dogs daily, said RBS Tyagi, Director Veterinary Services, South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

“These centres are almost fully developed and they will be inaugurated by September-end,” Tyagi told Deccan Herald.

According to the civic agency, altogether these centres have a capacity to sterilise around 100 strays a day.

“After commissioning of these centers, the South Corporation will be in a position to sterilise 30,000 strays a month against around 21,000 dogs which are sterilised at its existing centres every month.”

The sterilisation centres have been set up on the premises of the government veterinary hospitals.

The South Corporation has also started work for building four more dog sterilisation centres in Dwarka.

“These new centres to be set up in Dwarka will have three operation units each, which will have the capacity to sterilise altogether 180 strays a day,” said Tyagi.

The South Corporation is also in the process of conducting a survey to count the population of strays under its areas.

“The survey will begin by mid-September, and once it is over we will get the exact number of strays under the limits of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation,” said Tyagi.
The South Corporation is also purchasing ‘dog vans’ to catch strays and transport them to these sterilisation centres.

The South Corporation has enhanced its annual budgetary allocation for sterilisation of dogs from Rs 2 crore to Rs 10.40 crore this fiscal.

The South Corporation has also earmarked Rs 2.10 crore for the purchase of ‘dog vans’.
Registration of pets.

The civic body is all set to launch a mechanism for online registration of pets by this week.

An owner of the pet should have a vaccination card of the pet, a photo of the animal, and a residence proof to get his pet registered.

The registration form can be downloaded from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s official website.

A total of Rs 500 will be charged as registration fee and one has to pay the same amo-
unt as renewal fee every year.

Delhiites are known to flaunt pet dogs of imported breeds but not many owners seem to be aware of the procedure to register their loved companion with the civic agencies.

There are just 400 registered pets in the North Corporation – a civic agency which serves almost a third of the city with 25-million people.

While the East Corporation has 900 legally registered pet dogs, there are around 500 registered pets under the limits of the South Corporation.
