Hollywood make-up artist Donald Simrock is at the forefront of the beauty industry and has created path-breaking looks that have become international trends.

Known for drawing influences from art, nature, history and architecture, his clientele includes celebrities like Madonna, Britney Spears, Eva Mendez, Paris Hilton and Audrina Patridge. He is now in India as the official make-up expert for Lakme Fashion Week(LFW) winter/festive 2016 season. In a chat with Shilpa Raina, he elaborates
on the role make-up plays in everyday life.

Excerpts:

When did you decide to become a make-up artist?

I began working with make-up in the unconventional settings of nightclubs and discotheques both across Europe and in New York City. I had no formal training, which gave me the opportunity to try things that would normally be considered ‘taboo’ or ‘against the rules’ of traditional beauty. I later fell into a lengthy apprenticeship under Pat Macgrath, before entering the market on my own. It was under Pat’s guidance that I understood the mechanics of the industry, and how to handle the workload that ensues. You cannot put a price on this type of experience.

How often do make-up trends change?

Make-up industry is dynamic. Every day there are new trends coming out. Consumers are now willing to try interesting things and experiment. For instance, matte was a rage few seasons ago, now it is all about the glow and highlight. As the range of products continues to grow at an exponential level, so does the amount of trends that we see in a season. That being said, no matter what your style or taste, there’s usually something
for everyone.

Why did you decide to associate yourself with LFW?

I think that LFW brings one of India’s most exclusive beauty brands together
with some of the most creative minds in fashion. It’s a place where art meets celebrities; where fashion enthusiasts gather and pay homage to their country’s best. I feel honoured to be a part of it.

Does make-up help you look beautiful and feel confident?

Make-up should be an enhancement tool for the features that you have been given… not a mask to ‘create’ a new face. Feeling good on the inside is the only thing that really makes you look good on the outside. All the rest is just fun!

What is the key to building a long-lasting relationship with clients?

It takes time to build a relationship with a client. And during that time, trust and loyalty is built. No successful artist-client relationship can survive without some degree of trust. It’s very important.

Any make-up advice?
True inner confidence is what makes every woman beautiful. Make-up follows that. Own whatever look you choose to wear.
