Mother cooks up two-year-old daughter's kidnap story

CCTV footage exposed a woman’s cooked up story of her two-year-old daughter’s kidnapping in North West Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar area.

“The apparent motive of the woman was to implicate her husband in the kidnapping charge and retain her daughter’s custody,” said Vijay Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North West).

The girl was recovered from one of her relative’s house in Jahangir Puri, said police.

The matter came to the fore on Sunday, when Parvati (name changed) called a PCR van of her area that her daughter Gauri (name changed) had been lost in the Friday flee market.

“She told the police that some unknown persons have kidnapped her,” said a police officer.

After registering her complaint, police started the investigation. “As per the protocol wireless message was flashed throughout the country. Hue and Cry notice was pasted at prominent places in the vicinity. We also shared the information with State Crime Record Bureau (SCRB), National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB), Doordarshan and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in this regard,” the police officer added.

CCTV footage of the area from where the child was allegedly kidnapped was closely analysed.

Even after requesting for, the family did not provide the photograph of the child. However, the investigating team managed a photograph from the neighbours.

After getting the photograph, the search operation was intensified on Sunday night with the police reportedly searching for her near the market, and even in the sewage drains.

During investigation, police stumbled upon the fact that Parvati and her husband are in a dispute over the custody of their daughter.

During the process of scanning CCTV footage, police found that Parvati was alone when she went to the market on Friday. It contradicted her version that she had gone to the market with her daughter, said police.

Change in statement

Finding discrepancies in her statement, police again took Parvati’s statement. This time she said that two women had kidnapped her daughter, changing her previous statement dramatically. It also confirmed the police’s suspicion about her statements.

Police now confronted her on her changed statement, and in a bid to escape from the situation she changed her statement one more time.

“This time she projected a scenario wherein the relative of the girl took her to Mukrarba Chowk and left her there but within five 5 minute she was reportedly discovered by her relative who had gone there looking for her,” said a police officer.

Finally the persistent police interrogation broke down the woman and she confessed to have plotted a case of fictitious kidnapping of her daughter.

During the investigation, Parvati and her relatives admitted that it was their plan to project the kidnapping of the girl to take benefit in the court litigation that is pending between the mother and father of the girl.
