The cycle of violence continued in Kashmir on Tuesday with the death of one more youth in fresh clashes. The separatists extended the ongoing strike for another eight days with no relaxation on Eid. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar and Yasin Malik in their weekly “protest calendar” asked the people to continue the strike till September 16.

The people of Kashmir were expecting some relaxation in the two-month long strike on the eve of Eid. The festival will be celebrated on September 13. However, the separatist leaders asked the people to march towards Eidgahs everywhere and then to the United Nations (UN)  Office in Srinagar on Eid day to submit a memorandum to UN observers ahead of the start of 71st Session of the UN General Assembly.

For the first time in Kashmir, strike will continue on Eid. During the 2010 unrest, the separatists had announced relaxation in strike ahead of Eid and also on the day of the festival. Strike, curfew and restrictions continued across Kashmir for the 60th day in a row on Tuesday. A 20-year-old youth was killed in clashes with the security forces at Anantnag district of south Kashmir.

Reports said 100 others were wounded – among them a lady who is battling for life in hospital – after security forces fired pellets to break up a protest rally in Seer Hamdan village of  Anantnag.

Toll touches 74
With this, the death toll in the current unrest which erupted after the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani on July 8, has reached 74. The latest killing occurred amid the growing clamour on the ban of pellet guns while dealing with protesters.  Reports said a youth was critically injured in pellet firing in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Clashes were also reported from Shopian district where a policeman was critically injured after the pellet gun he was carrying went off accidentally. “A policeman on duty accidentally fired his pellet rifle into his abdomen, injuring himself grievously,” police sources said. Identified as Mudassir, the injured policeman was airlifted to Srinagar in a critical condition.
