While 1,724 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the city, the total number of dengue cases have reached 1,158 so far this season, said a weekly municipal report on Monday.

Twenty-one 21 patients have been diagnosed with malaria so far, it added. Malaria has claimed two lives and four people have succumbed to dengue.

As many as 387 fresh cases of dengue have come up in the past week, said the report compiled by the nodal agency, the South Delhi Municipal Corporation. Some 497 new cases of chikungunya have been reported in the past week, it added.

Of the total 1,158 dengue cases, 804 cases have been reported by the residents of Delhi whereas 354 cases of dengue have been reported by those residing in neighbouring areas, said the report.

Chikungunya
Of 1,174 reported cases of chikungunya, the total number of confirmed cases stands at 1,057, said the report. Last year, only 64 cases of chikungnya had come up across the city. Some 33 cases of malaria had been reported in 2015.

After five years, malaria has claimed two lives in the city.
While a 30-year-old man succumbed to cerebral malaria at Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday last, a 62-year-old man had died of 'malarial complications' at AIIMS in July. But the AIIMS authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death.
Last year, the city saw the highest number of dengue cases in 20 years with 15,867 such cases being reported in 2015. As many as 60 people died due to the vector-borne disease last year.

The menace of dengue started as early as March this year when two cases of the vector-borne disease were reported.

In July, a girl from Jafrabad in north-east Delhi died due to dengue at LNJP Hospital. The second victim of the vector-borne disease was reported to be Okhla MLA Amanatullah Khan’s sister-in-law, who died in August.
