Tripura CM faces backlash over remark

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar is in the eye of a political storm, with Opposition parties in the state labelling him “anti-national”.  This comes in the wake of Sarkar’s reported comments, earlier this week at an international business summit in the state capital Agartala, that India is playing the role of a big brother with its neighbouring countries. 

Opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) walked out of the state Assembly on the second day, even as it protested and demanded that the chief minister withdraw his derogatory remark against the country.

“Sarkar is echoing the voice of Pakistan. His remark, in the presence of an international delegation, especially at a volatile time when India is raising its voice against Pakistan at the UN, is not only detrimental to the interest of the nation, but also unconstitutional on the part of a chief minister of a state,” said TMC MLA Sudip Roy Burman.
