The traffic police on Monday conducted a special drive in western Bengaluru  against school van drivers for violating traffic rules.

The drive was conducted in Upparpet, Chickpet, City Market, Kengeri, Byatarayanapura, Vijayanagar, Magadi Road and Kamakshipalya areas. The drive, which began at 6 am, concluded at 3 pm.

“The police registered 450 cases for various violations and seized 12 vans. Major violations were related to carrying children in excess of the prescribed limit and jumping traffic signals,” DCP (West-Traffic) S Girish told DH. The police penalised the erring drivers.

The surprise drive was aimed at checking if drivers complied with Supreme Court directions on safety. The police will take up the matter with school managements to prevent the drivers from violating the court direction, he said.

“The police will write to transport authorities seeking suspension of driving licences of 12 drivers and permits issued to vehicles,’’ the officer said.

Driver detained
The Byatarayanapura police detained a school van driver for driving under the influence of alcohol on Monday in Chandra Layout. The suspect was identified as Gangadhar, 42, a resident of Bhairaveshwarnagar. The van belongs to Siddaganga Public School in Chandra Layout.

The police were conducting a special drive at Chandra Layout junction on the Chord Road. During the drive, police stopped Gangadhar at the junction around 7.15 am and subjected him to an alcometer test. The result indicated 279 mg of alcohol in Gangadhar’s blood, said the police.

There were two children inside the van. Gangadhar was on his way to pick up children. The police made alternative arrangements and sent the boys to school, said the police.

He told the police that he had consumed liquor on Sunday night. He also claimed that he did not consume liquor before resuming his duty on Monday, said the police.

The police booked Gangadhar under IPC Section 279 (rash driving) and IMV Section 185 (driving by a drunken person).
