Queen of Katwe
English (U) Cast: Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong’o
Director: Mira Nair

Mira Nair’s Queen of Katwe tells an inspirational childhood story of Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga), a world-class chess player, who spends her time selling maize in the dusty streets of Katwe slums and fetching water for the family.

However, her life changes for the better when she meets a missionary named Robert Katende (Oyelowo), a chess coach in Uganda. Under his mentorship, Phiona beats illiteracy to play the game of brains. And like many mothers, Phiona’s mom (Nyong’o) has her own dreams for her daughter other than playing chess.

While not missing the hard life in Ugandan slums, Mira manages to give her audience a feel good movie. Nalwanga, who is new to acting, is also able to bring out the powerful character of Phiona — a girl who tries to rise above the life promised by circumstances. While it is basically a film about chess, it is also about challenges and struggles. The message is very clear — nothing is impossible if you have the will, love and support from dear ones.

The film also goes beyond Phiona’s struggles. It talks about a widow Harriet, Phiona’s mother, who never gives up while trying to meet her family needs and at the same time maintains dignity. With passionate performances from Oscar winner Nyong’o and co-stars, Queen of Katwe is one of the best inspirational films of the year.
