Artist captures the mood of Goa and Greece on canvas

In bright oranges and serene blues, Bengaluru artist Jaya Javeri brings landscapes from Goa and Greece to the city in her 19th solo exhibition on Saturday at Windsor Square.

Old white churches nestled among green hills, mountainsides in the rains and relaxing beach scenes with coconut palms are the subjects of her shows titled ‘Moods of the Sand and Sun’.

“Since I moved to Bengaluru 20 years ago, my art had been mostly around the beautiful architecture in the south. Temples and heritage buildings were my subjects. This time, I have done something different, with landscapes and bright hues,” Javeri explained.

Serene beaches
The 25 oil paintings in the show have been created over a period of one-and-a-half years, during which she travelled in Goa and Greece. “In the last two years, I have spent a lot of time in Goa. The beaches are very serene and calming. I wanted to bring that out on the canvas so that those who view the paintings also feel soothed,” she said. The white buildings in Greece against the stark blue of the sky create a pleasing contrast.

Using a palette knife, Javeri has brought perspective into her paintings of Greek architecture. An MBA graduate, Javeri worked in the corporate sector for five years before she quit to take up art on a full-time basis. She had her first show in 1980. Javeri has had several shows across India and abroad in Singapore, London and New York. This is her seventh show in Bengaluru.
