Fun moments on a loop

Last Updated 16 October 2016, 20:57 IST
This is an era when most people spend a lot of time on social media and look at what’s trending. Be it to share stories with the world or to use different filters to make an image funny and interesting, the world of social media has something exciting that keeps its audience glued to their screens.

Instagram’s Boomerang helps people make GIFs spanning a few seconds. Though it has been a year since its launch, it continues to be one of the most popular video-sharing platforms. Niya Alexander, a professional, says the best part is one can play a moment on a loop, making it exciting to watch.

“The app allows one to stitch videos together and share it as one. I have been reading up about Boomerang and I found that this app is being used by brands to make product videos more engaging,” says Niya. She keeps tabs on what is new in the digital space and uses this app to make funny videos with friends and colleagues.

Recalling her first one, Niya says, “It was a video of my nephew who had just started crawling. It was a special moment for all of us and I captured it immediately. Boomerang is all about how creative you get and how well you put forth your ideas in those few seconds.”

With many celebrities using this app to capture moments, Boomerang is garnering a lot of attention among both stars and their fans. Working as a digital media professional, Sharanya Ranganath keeps exploring different kinds of apps and platforms that are unique and catching on. “Stringing photos together and making a GIF is creative and fun. I have been using this app for the last four to five months and it has been a unique experience,” she says.

One of the funny videos that she has captured is of her friend gobbling something up. “The video turned out to be hilarious,” she laughs.

However, she suggests that new filters and options like uploading existing videos and photos with filters or stitching stills and videos together can give this app an additional edge. Archana Suresh, who is extremely active on Instagram, learnt about this app a year ago when it was launched.

She has been using it since then. “Making a video is common, but the concept of Boomerang is different and engaging. I share moments with my colleagues at the office when we are taking a break or just goofing around. It provides you with a nice and new way to make memories. Looking at videos from a few months ago can make you feel nostalgic,” she says.

The videos’ repeat motion feature make them funny, she adds. And this trend of sharing personal GIFs is here to stay, she believes, because there is no other app that allows users to highlight a moment over a few seconds.
