80 million diabetics in India by 2025
'In addition to HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria, prevention of diabetes should also be considered as the national mission. The Central government should make budgetary allocations for diabetes, which would include research, management and subsidised cost for treatment of diabetes,' said Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, CMD, Biocon Ltd on Thursday.

At a World Kidney Day event at Manipal Hospital she said there will be 80 million people suffering from diabetes in India by 2025.
“The economic burden of the disease is high. In case of renal diseases the expense increases as the disease progresses. Eventhough, efforts are on to develop artificial kidneys it is still a long way to go,” she said.
"More time needs to be allocated for conducting clinical research on renal diseases. Students should be encouraged to chose research,” said Kiran Mazumdar. “Prevention and awareness about the disease are the only solutions to prevent kidney failure. I lost my father to renal failure caused by high uncontrolled diabetes,” said Jija Madhavan Harisingh, DGP, Commandant General, Home Guards, Director Civil Defence and DG Fire and Emergency Services.
