Dear Madam,
My son has completed BE Electronics with distinction. He is taking GRE exam and wants to go to USA for MS. He is keen to take Computer Science. Can you suggest a good university?
Ramprasad

Dear Ramprasad,
Some of the best universities in the US for Computer Science are Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia Institute of Technology College of Engineering (Georgia Tech), Purdue University, University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of California, Berkeley, University of California, San Diego, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Harvard University, Arizona State University, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, University of Washington, University of Michigan Ann Arbor, University of Texas, Austin, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), California Institute of Technology (Cal Tech) and North Carolina Chapel Hill.

Dear Madam,
My son is currently studying in Class 11 (CBSE) and wants to do his undergraduate studies in Microbiology in the US. Could you please give details of good universities offering courses in Microbiology, admission criteria, scholarships etc.

If studying in the US is expensive, then please suggest other countries that have good universities offering courses in Microbiology.
Shekhar K

Dear Shekhar,
University of Pennsylvania, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Yale, Columbia, Harvard, Stanford etc are among the best for Microbiology. If your son has a good GPA and is able to get high scores in his SAT and Subject SAT, he will be eligible for scholarships.

If you are interested in sending your son to Germany, start him on German language classes right now. While knowledge of German language is not mandatory for admissions as all the programmes are taught in English, it is highly recommended. The universities in Germany offer free education.

In all of UK except Scotland, the duration of Bachelor’s programme is three years. So, it works out a lot more affordable than USA or Canada. Imperial College London, Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, Westminster London, Nottingham Trent, Liverpool, Sheffield, Southampton, Birmingham, Kings College London, Middlesex University, Leeds Beckett University, Surrey, Bristol, Bath, Warwick, Manchester etc offer excellent courses in the area of Microbiology. These universities offer scholarships to academic achievers. University of Westminster, London — which is known for its scholarships — offers full tuition waivers to deserving candidates.

Dear Madam,
I have completed my second year in Aerospace engineering. I would like to take up research in the field of Astrophysics or Aerospace. My English is not that good. Which are the exams I should take? I thought of universities in Japan but I don’t know the details.

Could you suggest a few universities in Japan and other countries that are good and affordable?
Nikhila Priyadarshini

Dear Nikhila,
Daiichi Institute of Technology, Kyoto University, Nagoya University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Nippon Bunri University, Hiroshima University, Kanazawa Institute of Technology, Kyushu Institute of Technology and Sojo University are some of the good universities in Japan for Aerospace engineering. TU Delft in the Netherlands is known for Aerospace as well as Astrophysics. It is not only one of the best universities but is also very affordable.

Irrespective of the country you go to, you must take an English test like IELTS, TOEFL or PTE as an entry requirement. This is a very simple test which tests your speaking, reading, writing and listening skills.

Dear Madam,
I am a first year BDS student. I want to do my Masters abroad. Can you please suggest a good dental school, preferably in the US or Canada and exams that I have to write.
A student

Dear Student,
After your BDS, you can pursue MDS, MSc or PhD in one of these specialisations: Endodontics, Periodontics, Prosthodontics, Dental Material Science, Dental Implantology, Orthodontics, Oral Pathology, Paediatric Dentistry, Dental Technology, Primary Dental care, Public Health and Dentistry etc. You could also consider an MBA in Hospital Management. To get admission in a University, you need to only write the IELTS exam. To be able to practice in another country, you have to write the qualifying exams like ORE (overseas registration exam conducted by British Dental Council) for UK, ADC (Australian dental examination) for Australia, the licensing exam conducted by the American Dental Association to practice in the US and Canada.

If you want to pursue a PhD, it is advisable that you gain two years of clinical practice before you apply. Scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships are available for academic achievers. Some of the highly ranked dental schools in the United States are University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Columbia University, Boston University, University of California Los Angeles, University of California San Francisco and North Carolina Chapel Hill. In Canada, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia are the best.

Dear Madam,
I am a third semester BCom student. I got 7 CGPA in Class 10 and 78% in PUC II (CEBA). Due to some reasons, in the first and second semesters, my percentages were 52 and 49 respectively. I am working hard for a good aggregate. I want to do CIMA or MBA in Finance in the UK. Will I be eligible for it or not? Also, give details of other suitable courses in the UK and the work experience required.
Gautam

Dear Gautam,
You are certainly eligible to pursue CIMA and MBA. Rather than an MBA in Finance, I suggest you do an MSc in Finance and enrol to the CIMA alongside. Very few universities will accept students for an MBA without two years work experience. In the UK, the duration for both MSc and MBA is one year. During your last semester of BCom, take the IELTS test and apply to a university in the UK for your Masters programme.
