Ways to class up a bachelor pad...

Last Updated 20 October 2016, 18:39 IST

Bachelor pads are often described as messy, tacky and unstructured spaces; but times have changed and so have designers’ approaches.

From colour schemes, furniture styles and art selection, these spaces are becoming more design-centric than ever before. A bachelor pad is the ultimate man cave, but one could reconstruct it with some comforts and improvements that will be suitable for the owner as well as the guests.

Living room

The living room is where you will “hang out”. So, make it comfortable for your guests — not just yourself. Once you have carefully selected your essential furniture pieces, consider adding just a bit of personality to the space as well. Multipurpose furniture that is useful for daily routine as well as for having a large number of friends over the weekend could be placed in that area. One could also increase seating capacity with a comfortable sectional sofa.

If the living room sofa is sleek and modern, consider pairing it with a classic, traditional coffee table. The entertaining area could be extended by breaking down the walls of the living room and dining room and creating a bigger space for entertainment. The living room also needs solid entertainment systems which include television, sound system and gaming, to name a few. If the living area is small with a lot of furniture, big windows could be used to make the room look big and spacious.

The use of minimalistic furniture with a straight line form makes spaces look larger, instead of bulky traditional furniture. This kind of furniture is trending these days and is very convenient for users. The wall colours could be kept blue, which is sort of a popular choice among men; but to create a more upscale and sophisticated space, one could use brown or grey as the predominant colour.

The lighting of the living room could be made dim, to create a cosy mood and make it look more sophisticated. Dimmers could be added to the wall and ceiling of the room. Also, one could use spotlights to add a focal point in the room.

Bedroom

Not to make assumptions, but a bachelor pad is generally not well organised; so enough storage space is a must to hide the mess. The bedroom could have a built-in wall storage to keep clothes and accessories organised and within easy reach. If one has a solid concrete floor, a cosy comfortable rug could be used to give it a softer touch to the masculine feel of the room.

The colour for the bedroom should be soothing and natural, so one could use brown, grey or green shades. The bedrooms could have big windows that allow light to enter and make the room look spacious. Window coverings could be used if one feels that curtains are very feminine. Plus, window coverings give added benefit of light control, insulation and privacy.

Have a main light that provides most of the room’s illumination and a light for your nightstand. Both of these should have dimmers on them — this helps set a particular mood. After all, if there is a workspace in the bedroom, then one could use some good lighting. Add additional sources of light, like table lamps, floor lamps and desk lamps, which will create a warm ambience for one’s bedroom.

Kitchen & dining areas

Big or small — whatever your design preference, a kitchen can be a scary place if it is not taken care of. Just remember to maintain at least minimal cleanliness and to organise the space well. Invest in kitchen stands, pot racks and wine storage — whatever is necessary to help keep it presentable. The kitchen and the balcony could be used to serve food to the guests. So, one could have a small dining area with a shed in the balcony. This balcony could also have side tables for serving food, and lamp posts to make it look like a dining area. Now catch all the action live with an open kitchen space which will keep you connected to your living room.

Home office

Not all men have an office at home, but many have a personal workspace. A workspace is a must for a bachelor pad, if one brings work home. The workspace could be kept simple by having a simple desk and a chair with the electronic equipment needed. If one doesn’t require a separate workspace, then the it can be created in the bedroom itself.

Lighting is a hugely important piece of office furniture and can be a real difference maker in the overall productivity, quality and mood of your business. Natural daylight is said to be the best quality of light to work under. Direct lighting such as a desk lamp, an overhead fixture, or built-in cubicle lights is good, and it complements any lighting theme. If you don’t have access to daylight, an effective mix of fluorescent lighting and direct lighting is ideal.
