Three dozen people were arrested and over Rs 1 crore and 11 luxury cars have been recovered in a raid conducted at a casino, illegally operating from a farmhouse, in south Delhi’s posh Neb Sarai area on late Saturday night.

The farmhouse is situated a few metres away from a police station.
Those arrested in a high profile raid included including dealers, customers, organisers and staffers working at the betting den.

The casino used to operate from midnight to dawn at a farmhouse in Sainik Farms, owned by one Harender Kaushik. The police said that among those arrested, four had rented the property from Kaushik to run the illegal casino.

Kaushik and his partner Kunal Chandra are still absconding.

There were five tables inside the casino and chips worth Rs 100 to Rs 5 lakh were made available to players — most whom belong to Delhi’s elite class. Bets were made through tokens and accordingly, players used to exchange hard cash the next day.

According to the police, the gamblers were members of a particular group and thus, knew each other well. The illegal casino also employed four female bartenders and spent a lot on comfort and luxury of customers. The police said CCTV cameras were also deployed to monitor police action.

“The players had to pay an initial entry fee of Rs 5 lakh. We recovered Rs 1,36,45,000 in chips and seized 23 bottles of unlicensed liquor and 250 packs of playing cards,” informed DCP (South) Ishwar Singh.

“The Honourable Court is being requested to seal the property under provisions of the Gambling Act,” added the official.

Two separate cases of Delhi Excise Act and Delhi Gambling Act have been registered. The raid was conducted by a joint team of Neb Sarai and Malviya Nagar police stations under the supervision of ACP Diwan Chand Sharma.
