Last Updated 24 October 2016, 13:10 IST

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a plea filed by an activist from Tamil Nadu seeking release of persons arrested for allegedly spreading rumours about the health condition of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The activist had also sought protection from arrest after an FIR was lodged against him. "We are not inclined to entertain the petition. It is accordingly disposed off. Liberty granted to the petitioner to pursue remedy in accordance with law," a bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra and Amitava Roy said.

The activist, K R 'Traffic' Ramaswamy, on October 21, had moved the apex court seeking protection from arrest after a FIR was lodged against him by Tamil Nadu police for allegedly spreading rumours about the health condition of the Chief Minister, who is undergoing treatment at Apollo Hospital in Chennai.

He had said the police had booked him and others under various sections of IPC including charges for inciting class or community to commit an offence. The activist had also sought quashing of the FIR lodged against him by the state police.
