Legislation to change names of 12 cities to be enacted

Last Updated 26 October 2016, 19:46 IST

The state Cabinet on Wednesday decided to enact legislation to give effect to change of names of major cities and towns, including Bengaluru, in all laws and official documents of the government.

Though names of 12 cities and towns in Karnataka were changed in 2014, it had not been implemented in many government departments. This is because the related laws have to be amended to give effect to the change of names. Since amending all the laws is a lengthy and cumbersome process, it has been decided to enact a separate legislation stating that change of names applies to all laws and official documents of the government, Law Minister T B Jayachandra told reporters.

Once the proposed legislation is enacted, names of the government bodies like Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board will change to Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
Similarly, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will become Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, he said. The proposed legislation will give legal sanction for changing the names. It will bypass the process of amending the related laws, he added.
