Housing Minister M Krishnappa on Monday on Monday said a memorial would be built for freedom fighter Subedar Guddemane Appaiah Gowda.

Speaking Appaiah Gowda Commemoration Day programme oganised at Fort pre-mises here, the minister endorsed the locals’ demand for a suitable memorial for Appaiah Gowda, who is believed to be the earliest freedom fighter.

Appaiah Gowda raised his voice against British much before Sepoy Mutiny and also laid down his life as he was sent to gallows by the British, he added.

MLA K G Bopaiah recalled that whenever the land faced troubles from British, Appaiah Gowday revolted without any fear. It is worthy to praise the valour of  a great person like him, who displayed exeptional courage during the Sepoy Mutiny at Kodagu, Sullia, Puttur, Belthangady and other parts of the region, he said.

Mysuru and Kodagu MP Prathap Simha laid emphasis on educating the younger generation on Appaiah Gowda.

Simha also demanded for celebrating Kempegowda Jayanthi as a fitting tribute to the erstwhile ruler who founded Bengaluru, as a government programme.

MLA M P Appachu Ranjan lauded Appaiah Gowda as a man who laid foundation for freedom struggle.

Earlier, Minister Krishnappa accompanied by MLAs Bopaiah and Apacchu Ranjan, MLCs Suneel Subramani and Veena Achaiah, MP Prathap Simha and former MP A H Vishwanath garlanded Appaiah’s Gowda’s statue and the plaque installed at the place where Appaiah was hanged by the British on October 31, 1837.

MP, ex-MP divided on Tipu Jayanti

With 10 days left for Tipu Jayanti, Mysuru and  Kodagu MP Prathap Simha and his predecesor A H Vishwanath came out with divergent opinions on Monday.

Simha spoke against the government for continuing with its plans to observe Tipu Jayanti on November 10.

He called it as unfortuante as Tipu has the discredit of practising anti-Kannada attitude, as was evident with historical records. According to history, he promoted Persian language against Kannada, he claimed. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is out to indulge in ‘haram’ (bad job).

Former MP A H Vishwanath said it is a government-sposored programme and there is no binding to attend the programme.

If some people are against the Tipu Jayanti, they may stay away from the programe. Instead of making jaw-jaw comments on Tipu, let there be a detailed discussion to unearth the truth related to Tipu, he remarked.
