Last Updated 08 November 2016, 21:25 IST

Five district court judges, including John Michael Cunha, the judge who sent Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to prison, are all set to become High Court judges.

Cunha is serving as a Registrar General of the High Court of Karnataka and his name was mentioned by Chief Justice S K Mukherjee during one of the court proceedings on Tuesday.

At the moment, only 25 judges are sitting at the high court, including Kalaburgi and Dharwad benches.

The high court collegium had sent 18 names, 10 from the bar and eight from the bench for appointment as judges.

The state government has not approved five names from the bar, according to sources. By the end of 2017, four more high court judges are set to retire.
