Role of vitamin B12

Among the many vitamins absorbed from our diet, Vitamin B12 is exceptional as it plays an important role in the smooth functioning of the body.

Although we require just a few micrograms of this vitamin, it is mandatory that we get it every day.

Typically, deficiency of Vitamin B12 takes a couple of years to surface, as the damage is gradual. Inadequate quantities of Vitamin B12 leads to a wide spectrum of debilitating symptoms, ranging from muscular weakness, lack of vitality and energy, nervous damage, cardiovascular disturbances, blurred vision, memory loss, numbness and in severe cases, even personality changes and coma.

Hence, Vitamin B12 plays a crucial role in the functioning of various organs So, here are some other vital roles that it plays.

n Vitamin B12 is needed by the digestive system to convert carbohydrates into glucose. Glucose provides energy and the ability to work and function.

n It aids in the production of red blood cells. This prevents a condition called megaloblastic anaemia.

n A high level of a blood amino acid called homocysteine is a precursor to heart ailments. Vitamin B12 plays a vital role in keeping the levels of homocysteine under check. It also helps in preventing the build-up of plaque in the arteries.

n Homocysteine is also responsible for low bone mineral density. Hence, sufficient levels of Vitamin B12 ensures bone health too.

n Nerve cells are protected by thin fatty sheaths called myelin which prevent free radicals in the bloodstream from damaging them. Vitamin B12 ensures this protective layer of myelin is replenished.

n As it contains folate, Vitamin B12 helps in the healthy regulation of the nervous system, acting as a mood stabiliser. It is a natural way of keeping depression and other mental health disorders at bay.

n Vitamin B12 plays a major role in cell reproduction which is essential to keep the skin, hair and nails healthy.
