The demonetisation has brought hardship to Bengaluru’s wedding planners this marriage season as they struggle to pay labourers, decorators and caterers, what with cash-strapped clients unable to make payments.

“All our clients are inconvenienced as they have little hard cash. They have money in bank but there is a limit on withdrawal from ATMs and exchange of old notes,” said a representative of Sagar Caterers and Decorators, which manages Gayathri Vihar function hall at Palace Grounds.

“We have given them time to pay. No wedding was cancelled.”

A huge rush
Keshav, manager of Raju Enterprises, another wedding planner, said he faced a different problem.  “We take full payment from clients at the time of booking. But we have no money to pay the labourers, decorators or caterers. This is mainly because of the huge rush in banks and ATMs. We hope the issue will be solved in a month or two,” he said.

A representative of Nalapad Pavilion, another function hall at Palace Grounds, however, said they didn’t face any problem as clients were paying by cheque. People associated with White Petals, another function venue at Palace Grounds, echoed the opinion.

On the other hand, Radhakrishna Holla, president, Bangalore Tourist Taxi Operators’ Association, expressed frustration at the limit on withdrawal from ATMs and banks.

“Since one cannot withdraw more than Rs 10,000 a day, people like me have been badly affected. I have to pay car drivers who usually do not have debit cards,” Radhakrishna Holla noted.
