Heart of Scandinavia beating in a car

Last Updated 15 November 2016, 18:40 IST
Step into a Volvo Car, and it tells you one of those things what the Swedes do best, which is to build cars, and such magical machines on four wheels do get crafted. Enveloped in supreme luxury, driving into a scenic expanse, unknowing of the time sailing past, not wanting the drive to end! Volvo’s latest gift for the Indian car buyer – one of the most awesome-looking vehicles around, the S90 — and one of the best chances to savour it, by driving it through the painted scenes of Rajasthan.

The discerning luxury car buyer of India is spoilt for choice. The market has some of the best offerings on sale, each laying out many goodies that are relevant to make any drive a must-have. Incomes are on the rise, so are people’s tastes, awareness, and demand for some good things in life. And one of those best good things in life is a car, and a luxury one at that.

While many players have many offerings, what sets Volvo apart is its absolute build quality, some thoughtful and serious engineering going into its cars, and most importantly, safety aspects. At a time when, a lot of people (especially in the Indian market) question the need for more and more safety features being integrated into cars, lifting up prices, Volvo has paid immense attention to safety, often arriving at state-of-the-art, revolutionary ideas in safety technology itself.

With safety being one of Volvo’s paramount principles in car construction, no doubt, it sets new benchmarks with the other integral aspects of style, performance, and comfort too, when it makes cars. And the S90 is an ideal epitome of Volvo’s heritage.

Luxury language
Volvo is best known for its SUVs and estates, but its sedans and crossovers have created their own niches. The stunningly elegant new S90 is Volvo’s entry ticket to the entrenched luxury sedan segment, and marks a giant step forward for the car legend. The S90 shakes up the luxury sedan segment with its distinctive executive package. It further reinforces the company’s credentials as a Swedish luxury car brand.

Equipped with a host of new technologies and features, it bears testimony to the continuing transformation of the Volvo marquee in the luxury segment. Against the backdrop of Royal Jodhpur, the Regal S90 is much more than what the eyes can behold. The car’s exterior styling exceeds expectations on every front. The car looks sublime, and speaks of character and grace, besides scripting volumes of a delightful combination of majestic appeal and breathtaking aesthetics.

Just as its picturesque home country of Sweden, Volvo’s S90 is beautiful. It infuses freshness in the traditional luxury sedan segment with its distinctive Scandinavian design inside out. Based on the ‘Concept Coupe’, the car exudes panache and a clean design language. The concave elements in the chrome-finished grille provide dimension to the bold and proud Volvo Ironmark, flanked by the full-LED Thor’s Hammer headlights. It must be mentioned here that apart from the Thor’s Hammer headlights being one of the loveliest pair of car LED lights in the market, the very fact that the Swedish company has wonderfully weaved in a little bit of Norse mythology while creating these lights is fascinating.

The car’s sides have an elongated passenger cabin to cue open spaces and the signature shoulder-line treatment resembles a yacht, yet another symbol of luxury. The rear has a new distinct tail lamp cluster and the Volvo spread-out wordmark is a premium sign-off for the car. The Inscription variant comes with chrome-finish exterior package that underlines premium imagery, and the overall length of 4,963 mm makes it the longest in the segment. In short, one glance, and don’t expect to get a second look! Why? Because, that one first look at the car is enough to have one’s vision transfixed at this beauty, mesmerised by her looks.

The Volvo S90’s interior is luxury-redefined as well. One of the foremost sights that one will catch ascending this heavenly cabin is the attention to detail and exquisite materials that have taken a new paradigm. Everywhere you see, hints of methodical workmanship are aplenty, as if the S90 weren’t just a car, but a moving piece of art. From the finely crafted leather dashboard to the use of natural-finish walnut wood encased in a single-piece chrome element that adorns the front console — everything about the interiors will make one feel special.

The seat has soft perforated Nappa leather that enables heating and cooling through the seats. Both front seats have lumbar support, and power-adjustable seat-extenders provide supreme comfort. The NVH levels shut outside noise and cocoons passengers in serenity, while the cabin comes with 4-zone air-conditioning. The rear wheels feature independent air-suspension for going that extra mile in providing supreme comfort and ride. The interior air quality system enhanced with charcoal filter restricts particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 to enter the cabin. Such is the thoughtfulness, as explained earlier, that Volvo puts into developing its cars.

One of the most attractive portions of the car is to be found within its cabin. Like any Volvo, the S90’s cabin is one of the finest designs in the segment. Company designers have put in a lot of effort to make the drive in the car all the more memorable, with the superb dash. In the centre of the dashboard is technology at its best. The 9-inch touch display is one of the most hassle-free and intuitive systems to use, and enables the driver to concentrate more on the road. From car settings to entertainment and connectivity-enabled apps, it has the industry’s most-advanced tablet display. Built-in navigation and Apple CarPlay further enhance the experience.

The system’s Bluetooth feature readily clings onto any device, and the speakers that the S90 has on board offer some great sound quality. A little bit of rock music in a rocking car as this, and the drive is bound to rock. And yes it does, indeed!

Where do you go, my lovely…?

Driving a Volvo is a dream! Thanks to its safety features, the drive is an immersive experience, and feels like the car is taking care of you and watching over you at every mile. At Jodhpur, part greenery, part desert, the S90 puts up a brilliant display with not just its appearance, but also the sheer driving thrill it provides.

The car is equipped with a sub 2L diesel that delivers 190 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque. The engine is inline 4-cylinder turbocharged from the Drive-E family that optimises power, mileage and emissions.

Though being a diesel vehicle, the Volvo S90 peacefully comes to life. The inviting cabin, as said earlier, is an ideal place to motivate one to grab the steering wheel and take off.

On the road, the car functions very well. With deft handling, the well-placed steering makes driving through traffic irritations seem easy. At peak speed, the S90 can easily scale to over 180 kmph, based on how much we are able to test it.

The car is tuned to derive a balance between driving pleasure and driving comfort. It offers three driving modes – Eco, Comfort, and Dynamic, and independent suspension on rear wheels. Also, the S90 can comfortably make its way on steep inclines, which are commonplace in India, especially in the several hill states.

The Rear Parking Camera; Park Pilot front & rear; Park Pilot Assist for park-in, park-out, parallel, and perpendicular, come in handy to slip the car into some of the tightest spaces. The powertrain system is Euro VI-compliant, and the exhaust manifold comes fitted with the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that restricts the emission of particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 by at least 95%. Volvo Cars is the first car company in India that made DPF standard in all its cars since 2007.

Think Volvo, think safety
No Volvo car description is complete without presenting its treasure trove of industry-leading safety features. The company that heralded a norm in 1959, when Nils Bohlin invented the modern 3-point seatbelt, has built in many more safety mantras into the S90 as well.

An interesting safety aspect on the car is the Lane Keeping Aid, a unique feature for any car in India. The digital camera keeps an eye on the lane markers, and if the driver does not provide a steering input, the steering automatically corrects itself to keep the car within the lane. This feature is one-step closer to autonomous driving.

Besides, Run Off-Road Protection, Emergency Brake Assist, Seatbelt Pretensioners (all seats), Child Booster Cushion, High-strength Boron Steel, Whiplash Protection, and Side Impact Protection, make the S90 one of the safest motors around.  As European and sturdy the Volvo S90 is, it is also value-for-money for the brilliant mix of beauty, performance, safety, and Scandinavian design. The Volvo S90 – Inscription is priced Rs 53.5 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai, without Octroi).

Just as Thor, the magnificent God of Thunder, represents strength and protection of mankind, among his other divine attributes, the S90, with its thunderous arrival, has represented superior safety and design, both part of the larger signature of Volvo’s values.
