A play of light and emotion

Last Updated 24 November 2016, 18:32 IST

It was a small competition at work that got Tom Abraham D’Cruz to pick up a camera and discover his liking for photography. The software engineer loves working with pictures in which light plays a big role.

Though he hasn’t travelled much with his camera, his work has definitely made an impact on his fans. He chats with Anila Kurian about his journey and shares what he would like to experiment with in the future.

Tell us about your journey so far.
We have a photography club in the office where we share our photos and they are reviewed by the senior staff. I was inspired by some pictures and decided to be part of it. It has been about five years since I purchased my first DSLR and I have enjoyed every moment with it.

Describe your genre of photography.
I enjoy street, portraits and nature photography the most. But I do shoot for weddings as well — mostly candid shots.

How do you balance work and photography?
Thanks to the office group of photographers, we head out every weekend to explore the city. There are plenty of markets, streets and people’s picture to capture — it is a new adventure every week.

The camera gear you use.
I first bought a Canon 550D but after experimenting with it for a couple of years, I moved to Canon 6D. I use Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 135mm f2 and Sigma 35mm f1.4 lenses.

Your latest adventure.
I was in London for an office project and I thought taking my camera would be the perfect way to explore the city. I loved that the sun was shining till about 8 pm.

It was absolutely wonderful to be able to go out to the streets after work and capture the lives of the busy passersby.

Your favourite picture from the trip.
It was during my first evening there, when I came out of the office around 5.30 pm. The light of the dusk was absolutely beautiful, an orange-yellow shade. Since I had my camera with me, I decided to capture the passersby at Oxford Street and a lady happened to walk into my frame.

The big red London bus was also part of the picture. It is one of my favourites because of the emotion and light that it carries.

What does photography mean to you?
A photograph should have life and with the right lighting, it can tell a story too. It should also capture emotions. Photography, most importantly, should inspire one to look beyond merely browsing through the pictures; it should also make one want to know the story behind it.

Your dream project.
I want to create stories with my pictures like photographer Arjun Kamath. His work is absolutely excellent and it would be great if I could create a photo series like that. Since work is keeping me busy, I need to find that extra bit of time to do this.
