A Central team will be in the city in the first week of January 2017, giving the citizens and the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike a chance to prove where their city stands in terms of cleanliness vis-a-vis with other cities in the country.

The ‘Swachh Sarvekshan’ or Cleanliness Survey is set take off in Bengaluru in the first week of January — broadly based on five major parameters.

The assessment will be for 100 marks. The survey has many benefits associated with it. Many Central grants would depend on the survey results including a chance to get the Smart City tag, which the Silicon Valley of India had missed time and again.

To spread awareness about the ‘Swachh Sarvekshan’, Rohit Kakkar, deputy adviser with the Central Public Health and Environment Engineering Organisation of the Urban Development Ministry was in the city recently where he gave success tips to BBMP officials on how to ‘pass’ the swachacha exam.

BBMP engineer, Palakshaiah who was in the meeting, said that 40 marks were earmarked for cleaning, collection of waste and transportation; 20 for processing and disposal of waste at the solid waste management plants and 15 marks each for public toilet and community toilet, and individual toilets.

The last 10 marks are for measures taken to check littering and open defecation. In the previous survey, the city got 38th rank, which was a fall from 12th position when a similar survey was conducted in 2012. Mysuru has retained its top ranking in the country for being the cleanest city for the second time in a row.
