A month has elapsed ever since demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes was introduced but the district is yet to receive new Rs 500 currency notes. This was discussed during the District Development Co-ordination and Monitoring Committee (Disha) meeting chaired by MP R Dhruvanarayan here on Saturday.

Dhruvanarayan said the district received only Rs 2,000 currency notes but no new Rs 500 notes had been made available. “People are struggling to get smaller denomination currency. We have no issues regarding the ban of notes but the Union government has failed to take corrective measures and thus common people are facing hardship,” he said. Lead bank manager said the situation may continue for another two weeks.

‘Improve water supply’
Dhruvanarayan urged officials to ensure that the district receives sufficient drinking water. He said officials should complete works on the Bahugrama drinking water project at the earliest.

District SC/ST Welfare Officer Saraswathi said water was scarce in Mendare and Medane and suggested that borewells should be dug to ensure sufficient water supply. The MP directed officials to instal solar lighting systems under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana in tribal hamlets. He set a deadline of 10 days to get the lights installed.

75,000 toilets in a year
ZP Chief Executive Officer Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said ZP aims to construct 75,000 toilets within a year. The matter has been discussed with Rural Development and Panchayat Raj department authorities, she said. As many as 10,000 toilet pits have been readied and by the end of this month 20,000 toilets would be constructed, she said.

NH 209 upgradation
Dhruvanarayan said Central government had approved upgrading of National Highway-209 and the tender process for the same has been completed. “The authorities have completed procedures for tenders and also acquired 85% of lands.

“Works would commence once 90% of the required lands are acquired. National Highway Authority of India and other officers should remove electricity poles and trees for the works. As many as 544 trees have already been removed for the extension of NH-209,” he said.

He said the Centre has sanctioned Rs 84 crore and Rs 35 crore for the development of B Rachaiah Double Road. The road between Kollegal and Hanur, Malemahadeshwara Betta road and State Highway-79 would also be developed under the fund, he said. Deputy Commissioner B Ramu, and Assistant Commissioner Nalini Atul were also present.
