More action, less punch

Underworld: Blood Wars
English (A) Director: Anna Foerster
Cast: Kate Beckinsale, Theo James, Lara Pulver

The fifth “Underworld” sequel has Kate Beckinsale as Selene — the black leather-clad vampire death dealer. The storyline is simple: Selene must stop the endless war between the Lycan clan and the Vampire group that betrayed her.

The best thing to happen to “Underworld” series is Beckinsale herself. She manages to shine in this dark action franchise where she is mostly required to put on a tough sullen face. Convincing actor and cool entertainer!

This movie also shows how “Underworld” series is increasingly becoming a complex mythology. You have to struggle to connect the dots. If it had not been for a host of well-known supporting actors, you could easily go on a sleep mode. Tobias Menzies and Charles Dance (both from “Game of Thrones”) are as good as Beckinsale. We also have Lara Pulver (of “Sherlock” fame) who is ravishingly hot. That’s not all. We see Theo James (of “Divergent” series) coming in as Beckinsale’s serious fighting partner.

In short, “Underworld: Blood Wars” is loud in action, visually impressive but it lacks the punch and originality. Go for it only if you want to complete watching the series.
