A 34-year-old private moneylender was hacked to death by a group of unidentified people in Yarab Nagar in Banashankari, south Bengaluru, on Friday night, police said. The six-member gang of assailants tailed Avinash Anand as he drove from Chamarajpet to his home in Bayanapalya, off Kanakapura Road.

Attack with weaponsThe gang, travelling in a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), waylaid him in Yarab Nagar. Anand got angry at their indiscretion and alighted from his car to confront them. The assailants also got off quickly and, before Anand could understand their designs, attacked him with lethal weapons. He bled profusely and collapsed. The gang took little time to drive off.

Horrified passersby called the police control room, and a team from the jurisdictional Banashankari police station arrived the spot after a while. Policemen took Anand to a private hospital where he was declared brought dead.

Financial rivalry?
A senior police officer, who is involved in the investigation, said Anand had a criminal record, with several cases registered against him by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and local police stations.

“We suspect an old financial rivalry behind the murder and have formed three teams to track down the killers. Some suspects have been detained for questioning. CCTV camera footage is being checked to trace the SUV’s registration number,” he added. Anand was also dealing in real estate.
