Who doesn’t like going for a long holiday or spending some time off from work, perhaps just to revive themselves. As a new year begins, most of us start by scrolling through the calendar looking for festivals and holidays the year has to offer. Even students swear that they go through their college handbook at the starting of the
academic year to plan their holidays in advance.

Christmas is one such festival that marks the starting of the much awaited holiday which mostly extends till the New Year for every college student. And they eagerly wait for it. In keeping with the significance and tradition of the occasion, many students are making big plans to make it a fruitful vacation. Sharron D’cruz, a student of Mount Carmel College, says shopping with her family is the primary idea of the vacation. “My holiday starts with shopping for different things; which goes on till New Year. Since this time I am planning to wear something ethnic for Christmas and something western for New Year,
looking for what I want is going to be exciting,” she says. Sharron’s family usually visits  their family friends and catches up with people whom they haven’t met over the years. So Christmas is more like a reunion for them.

“The real fun begins after December 25th when we have a cousins’ outing for one to two days. Over the years, it has become a tradition, when the cousins meet and have a gala time. Last year we went to ‘Wonder La’ after which a long drive and finally a night out in one of the cousin’s place. This year, however, we are planning a trip to Coorg for two to three days. This is already getting me excited and I am looking forward to it,” she adds.
Sharron also involves herself in baking a lot of Christmas goodies like plum and sponge cakes, brownies and helps her mother with making wine. Christmas holidays, she says, are her days to experiment with food as she loves cooking — something she plans to continue this year too.

“Also, my sister, mother and I have a lot of fun before Christmas when we spend an entire day at a spa, pampering ourselves and preparing ourselves for the upcoming year. This year too this plan is on,” laughs Sharron.

Long holidays always come as a blessing for travel enthusiasts. Especially if one has a group of people always ready to pack their bags and set out on the road. Whether it is a planned trip or a sudden one, long road trips are always fun and give one a lot of memories to cherish throughout their life. Shashank Tekkham, a student of CMR Institute of Management Studies, is all set to hit the road and take a trip to Mumbai, Goa and Pune along with his friends. “We will start our trip on the 23rd of this month. The plan is to ride till Mumbai, stay there for a couple of days and then proceed to Goa for the ‘Sunburn Music Festival’. We will travel to Pune thereafter and then back to Bengaluru.

Since most of us are bikers, it will be a bike trip. We are planning to take four to five bikes and two cars for 15 to 20 people.I am really excited for this trip,” says Shashank.

Keeping alive the tradition of the joy of giving, Tamima Masroora,a first-year student of Mount Carmel College, is looking forward to spending  her holiday to the fullest rather than lazing around. “I usually visit old age homes on Christmas and spend time there. I take gifts for the people and spend my day with them, this makes me feel good. I have been doing this for the last three years. Apart from which, spending quality time with family, shopping and meeting friends I haven’t seen for a long time are the other things in my to-do-list this Christmas,” says Tamima. She adds that since her exams are starting in a few days after the holidays, she will dedicate sometime from her schedule to probably complete a portion or two.
