Last Updated 10 December 2016, 19:17 IST

The majestic cannon at the Paranda Fort in the Osmanabad district of Maharashtra that was built along with the Malik-e-Maidan tope of Bijapur was damaged.

One of the lion-shaped handles of the cannon had been cut with a hacksaw, which came as a shock to heritage lovers across Maharashtra.

Four youths, aged between 19 and 20, were arrested in connection with this incident,  and they are currently out on bail.

“It is a very rich piece of history and heritage... it is a majestic cannon,” said Dr Kurush Dalal, Assistant Professor (Archaeology), Centre for Extra Mural Studies at the University of Mumbai.

“It was a matter of shock for local residents who were saddened by the incident,” added Prakash Kashid, an Osmanabad-based journalist and heritage lover.

The Paranda Fort is one of the many forts erected by the Bahamani kings and is a fine specimen of military architecture and engineering. It is surrounded by a trench from all sides.

The fort comprises a rectangular plan with strong defences provided by a double curtain wall and a deep ditch surrounding the outer wall.
