Apurva Kasaravalli has surely taken time to direct his first film. He has worked in almost all the aspects of filmmaking — as assistant director, cinematographer and producer, before he decided to direct his first film.

His directorial debut, ‘Niruttara’, reflects his thoughts and imagination. Apurva prefers to call it a contemporary film that beautifully captures the happenings in the lives of four different people. Apurva says that there are many portions in the film that one can identity with and easily relate to. In an interview with Nina C George, Apurva unfolds the excitement behind the making of ‘Niruttara’.

What inspired you to make ‘Niruttara’?

The basic storyline of ‘Niruttara’ was given to us by Vikram Hathwar, a writer, who talks about the lives of four people. We have built on it. The story has gone through a lot of changes and has been adapted to the present urban setting.

Could you talk about the characters in the film?

I wanted to keep the subject and the characters in the film as contemporary as possible. Here, Kiran plays a musician who is happy performing at a few gigs and doesn’t want to do anything that will complicate his life. Aindrita Ray plays a documentary filmmaker, who is serious about pursuing her dreams. Rahul Bose plays the role of a vice president of a corporate firm and Bhavana essays the role of a housewife who also happens to be a trained Hindustani vocalist. She reflects the emotions of many a married women who give up their dreams after marriage. Here, you have four stories knit together.

How did you manage to rope in Rahul Bose?

Rahul agreed to work on the project after he thoroughly read the script. I couldn’t think of a better person to play the character other than Rahul. I wanted a suave,
sophisticated guy and he fit the bill perfectly. In real life, Rahul is not an overtly extrovert guy, has an excellent command over the language and goes about his business in a calm way. These are the qualities I had in mind for the character and I found it all in Rahul.

This also happens to be Resul Pookutty’s debut in the Kannada film industry?

You can compromise on actors and get the job done but you can’t compromise on the quality of technicians. I wanted to work with people who I know can deliver exactly what I want and I believe Resul can do the job perfectly. He has, in fact, done a brilliant job on the sound.

Are you happy with the way ‘Niruttara’ has shaped up?

One is never fully satisfied but when I saw the finished product, I can say that what I had in mind and what has come on screen are indeed very close to each other. So, in that sense, I have been quite successful.
