Govt plans to increase seats for poor in KVs

Last Updated 15 December 2016, 20:34 IST

The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry is considering bringing changes in the Kendriya Vidyalaya admission rules to ensure that students belonging to financially weaker families are enrolled under the special quota of the Members of Parliament (MPs).

“There are suggestions to fix a threshold of annual income of the family of the student to be recommended for admission under the MPs’ quota so that children belonging to poor families are benefitted,” an official source told DH.

Students belonging to economically weaker section (EWS) are enrolled to the Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under 25% quota as stipulated under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

“Changes in the rules for the admission under the MPs’ quota would open the doors of KVs for more such (EWS) students,” the source said.

The issue was discussed at a recent meeting of the board of governors of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS). “However, no final decision on the proposal has been taken,” the source added.

The KVS board of governors increased the MPs’ special dispensation quota for admissions in KVs from Classes VI to X earlier this year, acceding to a long-pending demand of parliamentarians. With the increased quota, nearly 7,900 KV seats remained reserved for admission on the recommendations of MPs.

As many as 1,000 schools are functioning under the KVS across the country, catering to the educational requirements of the children of Central government employees.

“... People want good and affordable education. And the KVs are very affordable. That’s why all (people) are after us (MPs and HRD Minister) for admission in the KVs... This is for the poor. And, they should get it,” HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Thursday.
