Grains, not guns for security: Swaminathan

Last Updated 18 March 2010, 17:50 IST

In his address at the diamond jubilee lecture series at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) here, he said the future belongs to the countries which have grains and not guns.  Food grains are going to be a scarce commodity in the era of climate change. The countries will be able to buy guns (arms) but not food grains, Swaminathan said.

The Government can set up a National Grid of Grain Storage and establish at least 50 ultra modern storages with a storage capacity of one million tonne of food grain in each of the units under the Climate Care Movement.

About the challenges to achieve success in the second green revolution and target of the Food Security Act, he said about 45 per cent of farmers want to quit farming because the Government and society have kept them in penury.

“The environmental and climatic problems are also posing a threat. The Government can train a woman and a man in every panchayat limits as climate risk managers to fight the challenges and emerge successful,” Swaminathan added.
