Don’t put us on election duty, teachers urge SEC
The scrutiny of the nomination papers filed by candidates to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections was completed on Thursday.
As many as 380 candidates till date have either withdrawn their nominations or have been rejected. Hopes of several independent candidates and those of aspirants of political parties were dashed during the scrutiny. Now, 2,170 candidates are left in the fray.
In one case, the electoral officer from Kodigehalli rejected the nomination papers filed by K R Nataraj, as the candidate did not furnish a proper caste certificate under the OBC ‘B’ category.
Meanwhile, teachers from various schools in the City have sent in petitions to the State Election Commission (SEC) and the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) office to excuse them from election duty. The teachers have cited the upcoming SSLC Board examinations as a reason to be granted permission from the election duty on March 28. SSLC examinations are scheduled to be conducted from April 1.
However, the BBMP had earlier made it clear that the SSLC teachers would not be excused from election duty as the examinations are being conducted only after the BBMP polls. On the other hand lecturers involved in the II PU exams will be excused from the poll duty.
