Last Updated 25 December 2016, 18:23 IST

Christian community in the district celebrated Christmas with pomp, gaiety and devotion. Celebrations began on the eve of Christmas with people from the community participating in special masses organised in churches. Celebrations were marked by carols, cakes, candles and decoration of Christmas tree.

Bishop of Udupi Diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo concelebrated the festival mass at Our Lady of Health Church Shirva. Mother of Sorrows Church in Udupi celebrated the mass at midnight while Christmas festival mass was conducted in Milagres Cathedral Kallianpur under the aegis of Fr Stany B Lobo Rector of the Cathedral.

The city has been soaking in the festivities with local stores, markets and malls being lit up with multicoloured twinkling fairy lights and decorated with paper streamers and flowers.

Most families have put up handmade decorations and set up Christmas trees and stars. Churches have been decorated with glowing stars and other decorating lights. Cultural programmes by youth members of the parishes also added spice to Christmas celebrations.

Cribs were laid out at churches and at homes to depict the birth of Christ. Various churches in the district like the UBM Church mission compound, St Lawrence Church Moodubelle, Holy Rosary Church Kundapur, SMS Syrian Cathedral Brahmavar and other churches were decorated with colourful lights and decorated  with stars. Festive fervour prevailed all over as people, irrespective of their religion, enjoyed Christmas lights, carols and shopping at festive stalls.
