Slum Board and illegal layouts

Last Updated 07 January 2017, 19:18 IST

The Karnataka Slum Development Board (KSDB) too has a fair share in mushrooming of illegal layouts, says civic experts. Entrusted with the task of providing housing for the weaker sections almost free of cost, the KSDB could not meet deadlines.

While the cry for shelter is growing louder, many of its projects in the urban areas, especially in Bengaluru are going on for many years.

This compels the beneficiaries to go for alternatives instead of craving for a slum board quarters. The quality of the EWS quarters remained a question mark despite KSDB taking many years to complete the project.

Take the case of Slum Board project of EWS quarters next to the Subramanyapura Lake. The project started in 2009 and was supposed to finish by 2010 but the work is nowhere near completion. Many poor families who figure in the list of beneficiaries have already occupied the incomplete quarters while others have occupied government land next to the slum board quarters and constructed shanties there.
