Last Updated 18 January 2017, 19:33 IST

Bengaluru Development Minister K J George on Wednesday laid the foundation stone for a sewage treatment plant at Halasuru Lake.

The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) will contribute Rs 4 crore for the plant while Bengaluru Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) will maintain it for 10 years.

The BWSSB has finalised the tender process and has allotted the work to Euro Tech, which is expected to set up the plant within six months.

The STP had become necessary as high pollution was resulting in frequent fishkill.
The minister also held a review meeting with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) officials regarding sewage treatment plants in multi-storeyed apartments. In the absence of STPs in many apartments, untreated water is flowing into the lakes, turning them into cesspools.

Waste-to-energy projects
George reviewed the progress on waste-to-energy plants. He instructed officials to accord priority to waste-to-energy projects and ensure that they are cleared at the earliest so that over 4,000 tonnes of waste generated in the city daily was properly utilised to produce energy and compost.

Mayor G Padmavathi, Forest and Environment Additional Chief Secretary T M Vijayabhaskar, Urban Development Additional Chief Secretary Mahendra Jain, BWSSB chairman Tushar Girinath and BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad were present during the meeting.
