From the next academic year 1.4 crore students in government schools will get flavoured milk in flexi packs under the state government's flagship programme, Ksheera Bhagya.

The project will be launched on an experimental basis in Tumakuru and Mangaluru. Once fully operational, the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) will supply 12 lakh litres of milk a week to all government schools. At present, the KMF supplies 20,000 tonnes of milk powder.

According to KMF chairman P Nagaraju, flavoured milk in flexi packs will be supplied from their units in Tumakuru and Mangaluru. Besides these, two more units nearing completion in Belagavi and Koppal will also be utilised.

Following complaints that students didn't like powdered milk because of the smell, the government had asked the KMF to supply flavoured milk. There were also health concerns because of unhygienic preparation using locally available and unfiltered water.

According to Nagaraju, the education department was apprehensive about buying flavoured milk because of increased transportation charges.
