NRIs to campaign for Congress in Punjab

Last Updated 20 January 2017, 20:00 IST

The Congress is now going whole hog in Punjab to woo voters with pep talks and some words of wisdom from the Punjabi diaspora.

More than 400 NRIs from the United Kingdom and Canada have come out in support of the Congress in Punjab and are preparing to join the party’s poll campaign towards the weekend.

They will meet party vice president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi before they set off for various places in Punjab.

While around 250 NRIs under the aegis of the Indian Overseas Congress, UK, are arriving over the next two days, more than 150 NRIs are also coming from various parts of Canada to be part of the Congress campaign next week.

Amanpreet Aulakh of the Indian Overseas Congress (Canada) is among those who have already reached India, the party said.

Taking agenda forward
Aulakh said: “NRIs from Canada will help to take the party’s agenda forward on the ground across the state.”

Daljit Singh Sahota, the Indian Overseas Congress (UK) president, in a letter to Dr Karan Singh, chairman of the Congress Foreign Affairs Cell, said the NRIs from the UK will travel to Punjab to campaign for the Congress candidates.

The NRIs will move from one constituency to another in a hired bus to spread the message for the Congress, said Sahota, adding that they had requested Rahul Gandhi to flag off the bus from New Delhi on January 23 or 24.
